Single Of The Week: Young Liar – Sponsored Silence

By Adam Clery on January 23, 2012 in Music

Who Are They?

Almost 7 months to the day that we started this whole Single of the Week bollocks, we’ve had our first repeat. Back in June 2011, when ‘Greek debt’ and ‘Arab spring’ we’re both still just takeaways in Bkyer, we brought you Young Liar’s Can’t Do Attitude for your consideration. Now the same band are back with the first track from their second release and it’s sounding every bit as brilliant as we hoped it would.

Not much has changed about the band since then. They’re still one of the region’s finest and loudest instrumental acts, only now their reputation is starting to reach the heady heights that their talents deserve. With an illustrious support slot with Errors on the horizon, 2012 might well be the year they kick on to yet another level.

Why Did We Like It?

The track itself, which is a little sneak preview of their forthcoming EP (we’ve heard it, and it’s excellent), is perfect in it’s simplicity. Where the temptation can often be try ALL the things on a second release, Young Liar have instead distilled themselves down, removing all the impurities and distractions, and channelled all their atmospheric ferocity into one track. It sees them at their post-rock best.

This cake may well have come directly out of the oven in Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky’s shared bedsit, but inside it’s absolutely bursting with layers upon layers of Young Liar’s very own jams and creams. The icing? The sickly sweet, almost glam-rock ending, to the bridge two and a half minutes in.

Want To Check Them Out?

Brace yourself. Not only do they have a Cluny show on the horizon, but it’s in support of both Errors and Remember Remember. So if powerful, expansive instrumentalism is your thing, then all your proverbial christmases have come, proverbially, all over you. Thursday, February 9th, if you’re interested.

Meanwhile, in the digital world, their second release EP2 is scheduled for March this year.
