Opinion: Brew Dog Newcastle Will Change Your Life

What do Scotland & Newcastle have in common? No, this isn’t the beginning of the worst joke ever told: it’s actually the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Finally, something that links both sides of the border other than laughable public transport and shameless disregard for weather-appropriate attire: Brew Dog is coming to Newcastle!
“What is Brew Dog?” I hear you cry. It’s a Craft Micro-Brewery. Well, it used to be. Now it’s the biggest Micro-Brewery in the whole of the UK. A Macro-Brewery, if you will, which you won’t. Their ethos is “Beer For Punks” supported by a myriad of beautiful, if oddly-named beers, an equity plan for their regulars and shock horror- friendly, knowledgable staff.
Brew Dog swear off traditional pub fare, swerving like like a misjudged hairpin away from mass-produced lagers and stale, dull ales and towards every vibrant flavour combination under the sun. You want a beer that’s so hopped-up that it’s 41% proof and has to be served in shots? You got it. You fancy something that’s been brewed with coffee so that it tastes as refreshingly stout as your morning brew? No problem. What about a beer so dark and brooding that it would reduce Robert Pattinson to tears? That’ll be £3.60.
The fact I know this comes not from any Brew Dog press release or clamouring advertorial, it comes from having lived in both Glasgow; where the most recent establishment resides, and Aberdeen; where the very first Brew Dog opened its doors. They used reclaimed gym hall flooring for the walls and chemistry lab stools to furnish it; from the moment I stepped through the door, I knew there were no pints of Fosters in my immediate future.
And thank the wee man for that.
You can pick up a pint of 77 Lager in a Brew Dog bar for around the price of a Stella in your local and the 77 manages to pull its major label rivals to their feet before systematically beating them to death with a baseball bat. Imagine a Bruce Lee film but with beer… and baseball bats.
That’s just your bog-standard lager too. The beauty of Brew Dog is that while they’re often poe-faced in their pursuit of Craft Beer perfection, they have a sense of humour too. Where else can you go and order a pint of Trashy Blonde? You can here, without getting offered any back room services. Depending on your preference, you’ll end up with a delicious pint of fruity ale or a venereal disease.
The real beauty of a Brew Dog bar is that they really care about the beer they’re peddling. Sure, it’s their company and their jobs on the line if it doesn’t take off but you’ll still find yourself able to try a little snifter of your chosen brew before you buy. They know that you’re not going to like everything that’s on tap but they’ll be chuffed if you’re willing to try something new. Need a handy hint? You should always try something new.
So come on Newcastle! Embrace the beer that your Scottish comrades have taken to heart! Sure, you might have a small while to wait until it opens (rumours abound it could be as early as next month) but that doesn’t mean you can’t get excited about the first time you walk through the door and ask for a pint of Punks Kill Nazis, does it?
