Preview: Lesbilicious @ The Stand

Are you a Lesbian or Bisexual woman? Do you like to laugh? Do you like to laugh at women? On the 26th March The Stand Comedy Club have the very thing for you. Lesbilicious is hosting another of its all-female comedy nights for you, Lesbian and Bisexual women (and anyone else you’d care to bring along).
Initially created to provide something a bit different for the local gay scene, founder Milly Shaw was astounded when 300 people turned up to the first event. “If you like drinking and dancing then Newcastle’s gay scene has a lot to offer,” she says, “but there’s beyond that and the odd gig, there’s not a great deal to do.” To remedy this dire state of affairs, Lesbilicious was born. The headliner this time around is Lara A King who will be joined on stage by JoJo Sutherland. Gemma Hutton will be compere for the evening.
This will be the first time Lesbilicious is hosted at The Stand. Despite its name, the event has always been open to everyone, and finds itself popular with Newcastle’s gay community as well as a straight audience. “We find that straight people want to come too because they find it refreshing to see a show of all-female comedians,” says Shaw. The idea is to move away from the “twenty-something middle-class white boys” which featured act JoJo Sutherland says currently dominate comedy: “Not to say they don’t have a place on the comedy landscape,” she says, “but it’s refreshing to see different parts of the spectrum getting a platform.”
The criteria for acts is that they must identify as female and that they must be funny. That’s all. According to Shaw, finding an audience in the region for all female comedy is much less difficult than finding local acts. “The sad truth is that we really struggle to find female comedians from this region. We’ve had comedians from all corners of the UK, but for some reason, high-profile female comedy in the north east stops at Sarah Millican,” she says.
Lara A King, this month’s headliner, won the 2011 Funny Women awards, which apparently makes her ‘officially the funniest woman in the world, probably’. Belfast native Hutton is the only woman to have won BBC1 show Find Me Funny and Sutherland has founded her own comedy club in Edinburgh.
Sutherland assures us that the event will fly in the face of crippling stereotypes of women in comedy “There is the age old argument that swirls around two points; firstly that women aren’t funny and secondly that all female comics are lesbians. I think Lesbilicious at The Stand will categorically prove both those points wrong,” she says.
