Competition: Dr Sketchy’s 1st Birthday Giveaway

By Adam Clery on April 25, 2012 in Stage

Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art school, that heady punch bowl of dancing, drinking and drawing that we brought to your attention some four months ago, is back again. Because we love you, we’re going to send two of you lucky beggars down there, for free.

As “First there’s some cabaret – flexible starlets, pin up girls, roller derby vixens, circus boys, burlesque, that sort of thing – and then, essentially, they do some modelling and, if you’re so inclined, you can draw. It’s not just an artists love-in though, the pen to paper side of the event is entirely optional and open to people of all scribbling abilities from illustrative-maestro right down to lovers of lollipop trees.”

If that sounds like your sort of thing, then we have a patronisingly simple game for you. Simply email adam@kyeo.tv with your favourite colour crayon, and we’ll pick a winner seemingly at random. The winner will be provided with two tickets (or, more likely, names on the guestlist) for the show this Sunday April 29th.

Founded in New York sometime in 2005, Dr Sketchy’s has since expanded into a global phenomenon with classes in over 100 cities around the world. Tokyo, Amsterdam, Zagreb, Panama, Paris, Dublin, Rome, Sydney, and, best of all, our own fair Newcastle. Combining cabaret that bends mind and body in equal measure, the lure of live drawing and drinks makes these Sunday afternoons a rare and unique little treat.

We headed down to the last one and, despite being pretty new to the concept of people getting their clobber off on an afternoon, really, really enjoyed ourselves.

Not like that.

When it comes to putting pen to paper, we can barely sign our own names, but it’s the participation factor that counts here, not the levels of ability. Prizes were seemingly dished out for whose artwork gave the performer the biggest grin, not which one would do best as A-Level coursework. As for how we’d look in a garter and nipple-tassels, frankly you’re better off not knowing.

As a result, in what may be one of the weirdest recommendations we’re ever likely to give, Dr Sketchy’s is a part-burlesque, part-live drawing event that can be enjoyed by fans of both, one, and neither in equal measure. We spoke to all three while we were there, and the smiles on faces were evenly spread.

Imagine the lunchtime strippers they have on in Sam Jacks for every Newcastle game. Now, replace the football with art, the glazed over expressions with enthused smiles, and the rank stench of spilled WKD and Lynx Africa with a warming welcoming sense of community and special guest cake stalls.

If it sounds like your sort of thing (or, even if it doesn’t, but the thought of spending another Sunday with your boyfriend’s parents and their toilet water gravy is making your skin crawl) then we’re nudging you very heavily in its direction. Facebook craic can be gathered here, and the wider world of Dr Sketchy’s can be accessed thus.

Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School is on this Sunday April 29th. Tickets are £8.50 and can be purchased here.
