Preview: Lulu James
The vocal talent of Lulu James is a glittering musical sheen on the monotonous monolith of otherwise comedic talent from South Shields. She’s the proof that the North East has a lot more going on than comedy and an accent that sounds absurd on the telly.
Ms James has an offering of an altogether more glamorous variety, and she sounds anything but absurd. While she discovered her talent as a singer by chance, singing at a friend’s party, her subsequent steps toward a stellar career are no accident. When it had been decreed by her fellow party goers that her voice was mint, Ms James wasted no time at all in developing her talent and using it to its full potential.
Her music has been described as melodramatic dub-pop and 21st century soul. “I don’t know what you’d call it,” she says. “It just feels natural to me.” While she is in demand across the UK, James has remained loyal to the North East and will be launching her EP, Rope Mirage, with a gig at Newcastle’s Cluny 2. “I am really looking forward to the show – it’s the first in a run of dates and it’s great to get on the road,” she says, “but there’s no place like the toon!” Aside from launching her EP, the show will be James’ first as a headline act. “I’ll be able to play for longer and do more songs and to have a bit more time to play around.”
Lulu James releases the Rope Mirage EP on 30th April and plays The Cluny 2, Newcastle on the same day.
