New event Big Busy, which brings together some of the region’s best alternative music makers, have chosen Newcastle’s Star & Shadow Cinema for their inaugural event on Saturday 26th May.

The event started gathering momentum right from the start bringing many like-minded musicians together. Dan Rose, from the hosting band Calf said. “We were getting pretty tired of playing the same pokey venues around Newcastle, especially on weekdays, while all the decent venues have been block-booked by promoters who refuse to play anything other than cover bands or cheesy dance on a Friday and Saturday night. We’ve all been performing in various bands for the last twelve or so years and have rarely felt like we were part of a scene.

It seems you don’t need much to keep people happy though: “You just need lots of fun people in a relaxed environment and you’ve got a great night.”

So having decided on the Star & Shadow Cinema, with its low-key vibe and reputation for some brilliant evenings, the project really started to take off thanks to the some off-chance connections on Facebook.

“I was reading a local promoter’s status about how it’s a tragedy that people won’t come out and support their local bands and lost it a little. Why should people be expected to drag themselves out on a Tuesday or Wednesday night to some crummy traditional boozer, way further than walking distance from town? The weekend’s for partying and that’s the kind of crowd people want to be performing to.”

Calf were introduced to Dead Like Wolves and, all coming from similar musical backgrounds, they decided that between them a good selection of bands with a common ethos could be billed for future events and hopefully a bit of a scene could develop.

There’s something for everyone at this event, with alternative/grunge/indie/pop before midnight, with some bleepy-bloopy lo-fi electronica to get people moving in the small hours.

In addition the foyer will be hosting a variety of acoustic and audio-visual delights with the venues range of projectors being put to good use around the space.

Rejections, Young Property Developers, Dead Like Wolves, The Green Hour and Calf play the Star & Shadow Cinema, Newcastle on Saturday 26th May.
