PREVIEW: Collabor-nation @ The Butterfly Cabinet

By Emma Howe on July 3, 2012 in Music

1. The act of working with another or others on a joint project

2. Something created by working jointly with another or others

3. The act of cooperating as a traitor, esp with an enemy occupying one’s own country

Well, we can leave number 3 to the Russians and the Soviets and numbers 1 and 2 to The Butterfly Cabinet who, this Friday 6th July, will present the launch of their first night of Collabor-Nation, a live music night with a real difference. For weeks now three fine North East acts who will be performing on the night have been locked away in rehearsals, collaborating no less, to bring together what will be a magicial showcase of musicianship and craftwork . The organisers have claimed the first event of its kind on the local scene will be ‘very creative, spontaneous and stripped back music for the soul’. Oh I say!

Headlining the evening will be sunny sandancers Jen Stevens & the Hiccups, and their cheeky brand of folk/blues/jazz pop. One of the hardest working bands in the North East, there will be no better experiment of how this evening will work than with a band who specialise in adapting many a style to please a crowd. “We’re all really, really excited about it,” says Jen. “Rehearsals have been amazing so far, and can only get better! Three pianos and five-part harmonies! Everything just sounds so pretty – I’ll admit I was welling up at the first rehearsal! I’d encourage everyone who can make it to try to get tickets and come down, it’s going to be such a special night, and I’m honoured to be a part of it.”

If you’re one for an atmosphere akin to a gun-shot wedding or a gig where you can put a smile on your face and not take yourself too seriously then Friday night will give you the willies!
