PREVIEW: Heaton Arts Festival
By Kate Hewison on July 16, 2012 in Art & Design, NARC.
A week of diversity and creativity. Some of the most peculiar forms of artwork come together from Friday 20th to Sunday 29th July for Heaton Arts Festival in various venues across Heaton. From light-hearted paintings during the day to burlesque in the evening, this miscellany of events can appeal to anyone’s taste.
Displaying artwork will be the likes of Vanessa Foley, and her array of bird paintings, and an exhibition from the ambiguous Ren Photography, who have photographed the likes of Bullet For My Valentine and covered shoots for Tattoo Master magazine.
In terms of music, a variety of artists will be performing, including Emma Kaye-Hudson and Elizabeth Morrisey, AKA The Blitz Sisters, who will be serving up wartime classics by the likes of Vera Lynn, while dressed in authentic Army uniform.
Of particular note on Wednesday 25th, Blue Rinse brings its own particular take on live performance to celebrate Heaton Arts Festival at The Butterfly Cabinet. This event exhibits four superbly diverse performances from Wellington Boot, Box Box Box, Tom Hollingworth and Claire Morgan, emotionally conveying an extract of her poetry show.
Finishing off this unique festival is the Alternative Miss Heaton pageant – the competition that celebrates the wacky and wild. Started in 1972 by artist Andrew Logan, this pageant is about transformation, creative free-reign and who has the most outrageous costume. So with Logan’s dazzling crown made of broken mirrors up for grabs, who will be Alternative Miss Heaton this year?
The Heaton Arts Festival takes place from Friday 20th until Sunday 29th July across various venues in Heaton, Newcastle.
