PREVIEW: Stockton Weekender

By Michael Park on July 24, 2012 in Music, NARC.

This year, from 3rd through 5th August you’ll be able to catch some of the best local and national acts spread lusciously across two stages (and a tent) and all for the low, low price of only £30 for the weekend!

The Weekender, an independently produced collaborative effort between Tees Music Alliance, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and the Arts Council will see its sophomore year punctuated by an expansion in both size and quality with local heroes, The Lake Poets and Hyde & Beast joining the likes of Willy Mason.

Friday night is a bit of a free-for-all as the festival promotes the best in (un)original music with a spectacular covers band extravaganza featuring people pretending to be The Beatles, some other people pretending to be The Kings Of Leon and some other people pretending to be Thin Lizzy and while covers bands may solicit a disgruntled murmur from most music fans, there’s bound to be something to suit all (dis)tastes.

Saturday’s when it really kicks off though, with headliners The Pogues forming the basis of your day, ready to bring their slow-paced form of anarchy to the main stage. Before that though, you’ll be treated to legends of 2006 We Are Scientists who are always up for a good time as well as Brighton outfit The Go! Team who – aside from their excellent music – have an exclamation mark in the middle! of their name.

Elsewhere, you’ll be able to catch Yorkshire comedian Alun Cochrane who – not to put too fine a point on it – is an excellent comedian who you will enjoy very much. Along with Cochrane, you’ll have laughs provided by the incredible and highly recommended New String Band. Not only that, you’ll also find The Chapman Family and Broken Broadcast plying their trade on the main stage.

On Sunday, you’ll find Nottingham’s answer to Bob Dylan Jake Bugg on the main stage before chronic anthem-makers James take to the stage to close the weekend. We rolled our eyes when we saw James headlining but a quick internet search quickly revealed that there are loads of really good James songs who we thought were someone else.

The best part of all of this is that it’s totally family friendly. Every adult ticket entitles the holder to two free under-14s tickets. So take the kids along, enjoy the music, the comedy and the good weather (hopefully!) at the Stockton Weekender.

The Stockton Weekender takes place in Stockton from Friday 3rd until Sunday 5th August. For the full line-up visit the website.
