PREVIEW: The Cumberland Arms Anniversary Celebration

Where else can you enjoy circles of ukulele players, ping pong, Rappers (the sword carrying kind) and hearty food and drink? In addition to the usual wonderful events The Cumberland host, their special anniversary gigs are absolute blinders, and this year is no exception.

Kicking off on Thursday 9^th August with old friends Beccy Owen, Richard Dawson and Nev Clay providing a wonderful evening of relaxed banter and beautiful tunes, the merriment continues on Friday 10^th with Warm Digits providing a semi-improvised brew of metronomic rhythms, snowstorm guitars and frantic free jazz drumming, joining them is Winter North Atlantic who will be playing tunes from their forthcoming album Yaga’s Cabin.

Veering away from musical loveliness, the Pub Olympics on Saturday 11^th has the chance of being a hundred times more interesting than the actual event – finally someone’s made Olympic events of throwing mallets, catching beer mats and pickled egg and spoon races. On Sunday 12^th Cumberland favourites The Baghdaddies bring their rousing and infectiously danceable show to the venue; while on Monday 13^th you can test your knowledge of The Cumberland and the Ouseburn Valley in a special edition of The Cumberland Pub Quiz.

The celebrations culminate in The Ultimate Folk Session on Wednesday 15^th – famous for its back room sessions, The Cumberland invite old and new musicians to join together for a one night only extravaganza.
