PREVIEW: Franz Nicolay

By Claire Dupree on August 21, 2012 in Music, NARC.

Multi-talented singer songwriter Franz Nicolay – he of Hold Steady fame, amongst other things – is playing an intimate gig in the region this month. His performance at Gateshead’s Central Bar on Friday 24th August will help promote his new album, and first for influential label Xtra Mile, entitled Do The Struggle and released on 6th August.

The new record is purported to have a more cinematic quality than previous albums. With producer oktopus, of innovative New Jersey industrial/hip-hop group dälek at the helm, Nicolay has moved beyond the singer-songwriter realm to create a dark and explosive record filled with personal and political anger. Recent single Did Your Broken Heart Make You Who You Are is a Smith-like approach to cinematic pop, with galloping vocals, and swoonsome harmonies and is a tantalising taste of what’s to come from the multi-instrumentalist’s third record.

Franz Nicolay’s appearance in our little corner of the world is part of a mammoth world tour which sees him performing along the Trans-Siberian Railroad in Mongolia and in Beijing.

Franz Nicolay plays at The Central Bar, Gateshead on Friday 24th August. Do The Struggle is released on 6th August via Xtra Mile Recordings.
