The North East's arts & culture dispatch

PREVIEW: U Belong

By Lauren Vevers on August 30, 2012 in Music, NARC.

Feeling a lack of real Detroit/Chicago house music in the North East, a collective of devotees have come together to create a brand new club night. u Belong provides a home for house music and launches at No.28 in Newcastle on Sunday 2nd September. The music will be funky, soul and groove-based. If the likes of Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig and Frankie Knuckles float your boat then look no further.

“I think the difference is that most places are playing tech house or quite commercial stuff, so we’re trying to get across that this night is about the essence of house music as it was when it was first starting out,” said Sarah Rees, chief organiser and champion of the genre. They will also be playing the newest music coming out of the US right now.

Nights similar to this one have already been well established in Manchester and u Belong hopes to lead the field in Newcastle and to make it part of the regular scene.  Every first Sunday of the month, No.28 will play host to this laidback homage to house, encouraging others to appreciate the true spirit of the music.

U Belong takes place on the first Sunday of every month at No. 28, Newcastle.
