PREVIEW: #GN006 – Divorce, NWKS, & Tide of Iron @ The Cluny 2
By Andrew Openshaw on September 10, 2012 in Music
40 seconds into track one of radgy Glaswegian metal band Divorce’s debut album you hear screaming banshee front woman Jennie Fulk wail as if she is being murdered, over the top of thrashing guitars and high pitched feedback. It’s scary stuff. And that pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the album.
When I caught up with drummer Andy Brown (the only non female member) he assured me though that Jennie and the others are “…pretty well-adjusted, if they had bald heads, cut-off combats, head-to-toe tattoos and penises no-one would bat an eyelid.” Yeah right…!
It’s a very aggressive and intense album but one that will prove incendiary when performed live at The Cluny 2 in Newcastle on Wednesday 12 September as part their five date mini tour. Recorded on Night School Records the nine tracks have some inspired names – two such gems are Aids Of Space and Cunts In A Circle which is, according to Andy, “Earth itself, according Jennie after a pint of weed.” There’s also a special kind of homage to Bill Murray in there too. Divorce have played some mental shows in Newcastle in the past and Andy promises they’ll once again “bring the noise”. Support will come from Newcastle’s finest drone luminaries, Nately’s Whore’s Kid Sister and Tide Of Iron.
