PREVIEW: Mr Drayton’s Record Player @ The Tyneside Cinema
Do you find you never get the opportunity to sit down with your favourite album and a glass of booze and just take it all in? Then comedian and music aficionado Mr Drayton is here to help you appreciate your favourite classic albums. Armed with his Record Player, a craftily concocted slide show and a smattering of interesting facts, Mr Drayton sets up the audience for a night of mutual appreciation.
Taking place every week at the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle, the audience can listen to a treasured album and take part in a quiz about it afterwards. “Audiences are encouraged to hang around and chat.” Says Mr Drayton himself. “It’s a very relaxed and friendly night, an antidote to today’s ‘I want it all, I want it now’ culture.”
The new season kicks off on Friday 21 with a special ‘glam slam’ night featuring T Rex’s Electric Warrior versus Lou Reed’s Transformer, and on Friday 28 Prefab Sprout’s Steve McQueen gets a spin. Highlights for the rest of the year (subsequently held on Thursdays) include Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (4 Oct), Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ Don’t Stand Me Down (18 Oct), Bowie’s Aladdin Sane (15 Nov) and the very special Record Player Christmas Singles Club (20 Dec).
The show starts at 7.30pm, with tickets just £5.
