The Cluny Birthday
By Jack Gilbert on October 24, 2012 in Music
Do you ever stop in your everyday activities and think to yourself, ‘what am I going to do on the first weekend of November?’ Well, any questions, doubts or uncertainties have been answered with utmost aplomb by The Cluny as they present their Tenth Anniversary Weekender on the 1st to the 4 thNovember.
The weekend features a host of excellent live music from some of the north east’s favourite bands and it all kicks off on Thursday November 1st with a free show from Minotaurs and The Lake Poets. The Lake Poets, AKA Martin Longstaff, will provide his delightful brand of acoustic indie and folk. While Minotaurs are due to play a rare live show and they will be delivering their haunted guitar rock to The Cluny.
The Friday night will feature Mercury nominated Field Music who are currently going from strength to strength. Field Music offer a rare eclectic take on post-rock, and their uplifting sound has given them increasingly enthusiastic accolades. They are veritable veterans of The Cluny and they will be more than amply supported by Warm Digits and John Egdell.
The Saturday night will see an appearance by the kingpins of North East music, The Futureheads, as they return to play their eponymous debut album of 2004 in full. The Sunderland four piece have recently come out with a critically acclaimed entirely a capella record, Rant, but will be performing their classic indie tunes to what will be a packed out Cluny on the Saturday night of the festivities. They will be supported by up and coming instrumental rock act, Young Liar. This event, we must warn you, has already sold out.
Finally, proceedings will be drawn to a close by a free show on Sunday afternoon with Serious Sam Barrett and David Broad playing in The Cluny bar area. While the evening will see sets from Dreaming Spires and The Kontiki Suite. Dreaming Spires have received some very impressive reviews to their folky/American rock debut album. While The Kontiki Suite hailing from the Lake District have received airplay from the likes of Steve Lamacq and will no doubt end things in style.
The Thursday will also see the launch of a special retrospective photo exhibition in The Cluny’s gallery space, featuring a wide range of local photographers, each of whom have chosen their favourite photo taken at the venue. It will feature around 20 photographers, including Chris Moody, Alan Harrison, Charles Holley, Jill O’Donnell, Daniel Robson, Adam Hampton-Matthews, Julian Ive, Sarah Laquiz plus more to be confirmed and the exhibition will run throughout November and December.
They’ll also have a very special Cluny Tenth Anniversary ale, made specially by Wylam Brewery.
