Cuts. Cuts, cuts, cuts and deficit. It’s a repetitive time, ‘an age of austerity’ to give the soundbite. To reflect the moods of the times, whatever they may be, is a challenge. ‘Cuts’ are still things that are unknown, not quite fully fledged enough to be an understood reality – but a question is being asked around how this onslaught can be reflected in art.
The Coalition of Artists is a new group trying to encourage creative folks to come together, to create whatever they can to reflect people’s thoughts, fears or encouragement of the Government’s plans for deficit reduction.

VBS.TV, part of Vice UK, are continuing their Rule Britannia series with a look at how you train freshly inducted soldiers to fight.
The five part series follows the training regime of 2nd Para in a mock Afghanistan village in Norwich, dealing with ex-pat Afghanis and Gurkhas employed by the army to act as Afghan civilians, Taliban and suicide bombers.

I could take you an on obvious journey. Bang on a little about the depths of our insignificance and what looking up to the sky can do to blow the mind, but it all seems a little overdone. Space. That ole chestnut of being the final frontier and all that.
That’s not to say the affect doesn’t still ring true. There is a natural drive and fascination with the unknown, it’s a quality of the human condition. In Kielder, the place known for its water, an award winning observatory is available – and exceptionally gracious – to strangers coming along wanting to ask unanswerable questions and strain their neck muscles with mouths gawking.

The recession was more the last kick of an already down business form, rather than a sudden shock to retail and the need for a central shopping high street.
The high street’s decline has been bruised by the recession, 1 in 5 shops stand empty in the North East and schemes are being set up to fill them temporarily until things pick up, focusing on art and creative solutions for a few months at a time.

A new exhibit at the old Hancock Museum, now Great North Museum: Hancock, delves into the cultural effect the Great North Run has had in the region over its 30 year history.

The ¡VAMOS! festival started over the weekend, with a mixture of music, talks and early 20th century photography to celebrate Latin American culture.
The opening of a new ¡VAMOS! shop, at 18 New Bridge Street West, showcased 1920-1950s early documentary photography, with ‘Modernity in the Peruvian Andes’ told through the eyes of Martin Chambi and his apprentices the Cabrera brothers.
